  • Masterclass in Rap and Spoken Word: Monday, February 27, 5:00 – 6:30 pm

The focus of this masterclass is rap and spoken word. Students will learn about Hitting New Heights performers Mandy Gonzalez and Javier Muñoz, their history with Tony ad Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Lin Manuel Miranda, and their experiences as understudies in Broadway. Students will then learn how to craft, write, and perform their own raps on topics that matter to them. Recommended for grades 7+.

Your Best Friends Favorite Rapper is excited to return to the Gallo Center. Jelani Brown graduated from The University of the Pacific with a BM in Music Management and a focus on violin studies. While attending the music conservatory he released the school's first hip-hop project through the student-led label Pac Ave Records. As an Artist Educator, he has opened up for artists such as Kiana Lede, P-Lo, and The Ohio Players. He is a Resident Artist/Director for Stockton Soul, a Soul Orchestra dedicated to educating, empowering, and inspiring our audiences through the performance of Black American Music. As a violinist, he is no stranger to the Gallo Center playing in the orchestra pit for musicals such as White Christmas, Peter Pan, and Hello Dolly to taking the main stage as a finalist in Valleys Got Talent. Some of his favorite roles include Othello in Othello and being a part of an improv troop for the Summer Survivor Improv Show, and Sam in Holes.
