To begin with, it’s a story about how people came together to create a new community treasure, a performing arts center that promised to be one of the most important projects in Stanislaus County's history.
The mission of the Gallo Center for the Arts is to enrich the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain.
In the spring of 1997, Marie Damrell Gallo was asked by then Modesto Mayor Dick Lang to assemble a research team to investigate the feasibility of building a downtown performing arts center. A team of about 20 people was assembled from the private and public sectors, including various community and business leaders. And the rest is history.
Since its opening in 2007, the Gallo Center for the Arts has had a profound impact on the City of Modesto. A fading downtown began a revival that continues to this day. Extraordinary arts education experiences have benefited thousands upon thousands of schoolchildren in Modesto and neighboring communities. World-class entertainment has become a year-round opportunity for residents and visitors. The city enjoys an architectural centerpiece that serves as a spectacular civic gathering place, and organizations including Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Central West Ballet, Opera Modesto and Modesto Performing Arts have a home worthy of their artistic ambitions.
